"EMDR is amazing;
what a powerful resource...
I felt cared for and loved during the process, and such compassion. I left feeling lighter, clearer, and more able to focus on other necessary recovery work."
Partner, Three-Day Intensive
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is now one of the most well-researched and most effective and efficient psychotherapy treatments for trauma.  Below are a number of questions most asked about this highly effective treatment.

WHAT DOES EMDR TREAT?

  • Negative childhood memories
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Depression
  • Shame/Criticism
  • And more…

WHAT IS EMDR?

Simply stated, EMDR is an information-processing therapy that includes several aspects: history-taking, assessment of coping skills and client stability, utilization of stress reduction tools, identification of a target or current situation which evokes traumatic memory and finally, the use of specific protocols to lessen the intensity of sensations in order to increase positive experiences needed for mental health, vitality and secure attachment with others. When the processing of a memory is completed through EMDR Therapy, the memory no longer has the same emotional charge. You can and will remember the memory, but it no longer causes the same traumatic reactions and feelings.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN EMDR SESSION?

During an EMDR Therapy session, I ask you a number of questions related to the traumatic memory and your feelings surrounding it. During the processing, I have you either follow my fingers with your eyes as they move left to right, hold on to “buzzers” that alternate vibrations between your hands, wear headphones with tones that alternate left and right, or some combination of the above. These are all types of “bilateral stimulation” that help your brain process the trauma. I support and guide you as you process your memories and feelings until the memory is no longer disturbing to think about.

WHAT KINDS OF MEMORIES CAN
EMDR THERAPY HELP?

EMDR can help with a variety of painful emotional experiences. Some examples of these experiences include:
  • Memories of being shamed or criticized
  • Betrayal by a loved one
  • Growing up with a parent who could easily become angry
  • Growing with an emotionally unavailable parent
  • Growing up with a parent who drank too much
  • Memories of being spanked, hit or otherwise physically injured
  • Memories of being sexually abused or assaulted
  • Times you thought you might die
  • Losing someone you love
  • Memories of parents divorcing, and/or going through your own divorce or ending of a relationship

HOW IS EMDR THERAPY DIFFERENT FROM
"TALK" THERAPY

EMDR Therapy is a structured systematic approach. It includes a combination of me guiding the process and you just observing and reporting what comes up when you think about specific aspects of a specific memory. For resolving painful memories, EMDR Therapy typically works much faster and more deeply than traditional talk therapy. Likewise, talk therapy combined with EMDR is often more comprehensive and effective.

HOW LONG DOES EMDR THERAPY TAKE?

There is a preparation and assessment phase of EMDR Therapy during which I assess your readiness for EMDR Therapy processing. Once processing begins, some traumas can process very quickly (sometimes as fast as one processing session). Other traumas are more complex and require much longer. I give you an indication of how long it will likely take to work with your traumatic or negative memories.

Also, since many of my clients are also addicts and partners in recovery, our therapy includes a combination of interventions that are outcome driven, evidence-based and task-centered in addition to EMDR Therapy and other modalities.

Because extended sessions are often beneficial in working with trauma, Recovery of Self Counseling and Intensives offers one to four “hour” (a clinical hour is typically 50 minutes) sessions as well as Intensives
